The tank is not always full

We purchased Thundercracker, our 2023 Tesla Model Y Long Range All-Wheel Drive, on May 19, 2023. The window sticker estimated 330 miles at a full charge.

Three years and 57,788 miles later, Thundercracker now reports 281 miles at a full charge.

TeslaFi.com has monitored Thundercracker since we purchased it. Its records show a starting estimated range of 328.69 miles and a current estimated range of 281.75 miles. That is a loss of 46.94 miles, or about 14.3%.

The decline has not happened in a perfectly straight line. The estimate moves up and down slightly, but the long-term trend is clear.

TeslaFi.com also compares Thundercracker with similar vehicles at approximately the same mileage. The small comparison group averaged 286.28 miles, while Thundercracker showed 281.75 miles. That means Thundercracker is slightly below average, but not dramatically so.

That matters because the car also reports that the battery is operating normally. In other words, losing a noticeable amount of range does not necessarily mean the battery is defective. It may simply be part of normal EV ownership.

The 80% Tank You Actually Use

Tesla recommends daily charge be limited to 80%. It’s something we’ve been doing since purchasing the vehicle.

When the car was new, 80% of 330 miles was about 264 miles. Today, 80% of 282 miles is about 226 miles.

That means our normal starting range has dropped by nearly 40 miles.

For most daily driving, 226 miles is more than enough. The difference becomes more noticeable on longer trips.

Our normal Tennessee trip is 96.1 miles each way, or 192.2 miles round trip. We try to arrive home with at least 10% remaining so we have a buffer for traffic, detours or an unexpected stop.

When Thundercracker was new, that trip had plenty of breathing room that allowed us to drive around TN without needing to stop for a charge as soon as we arrived. Today, the margin is smaller. And there’s been zero Superchargers added in Cleveland, TN to help with this situation.

In winter, we always need to Supercharge on the return trip. Cold weather, cabin heat and highway speeds all reduce actual range. In summer, the air conditioning is normally set to 72 degrees. Increasingly, we also make one Supercharger stop during warmer-weather trips.

The stop is not a major inconvenience. In fact the older we get the more we actually enjoy the forced break in the drive. The stop is simply something we hoped to avoid when we upgraded from the standard range Model 3 to the Long Range Model Y.

The Tires May Affect Actual Range

In January 2025, we replaced all four tires with Continental ControlContact Sport SRS+ tires in the original 255/45R19 size. They have a 104 load index, W speed rating and Extra Load construction.

Replacement tires can affect efficiency because tread design, compound and rolling resistance vary. That may affect how far Thundercracker actually travels on a charge, although it does not fully explain the lower estimated range shown by the car.

How Much More Drain Should We Expect?

Nobody can predict the exact number, but we do have a few more years before the car loan is paid in full. We know battery degradation does not always continue at the same rate.

However, Thundercracker has lost about 47 miles of estimated range over a little more than three years. If the recent trend continued, the car could show somewhere around 240 miles at a full charge three years from now.

At our normal 80% charging limit, that would mean roughly 192 miles of displayed range.

That is not a prediction. It is simply where the current trend points.

The more important issue is that Thundercracker will also have much higher mileage by then and less remaining battery warranty. That will directly impact re-sale or trade in value.

What Does Tesla’s Battery Warranty Cover?

Tesla provides an 8-year or 120,000 mile warranty covering the battery. Thundercracker’s Battery and Drive Unit Limited Warranty expires on May 18, 2031, or at 120,000 miles, whichever comes first.

The warranty provides at least 70% battery-capacity retention during that period.

Seventy percent of the original 330-mile estimate is about 231 miles. That does not mean Tesla automatically replaces the battery when the screen shows 231 miles. Tesla would use its own diagnostics to determine the battery’s actual capacity.

At our current driving rate, we are more likely to reach the mileage limit before the calendar expiration date.

What Happens When You Sell a Smaller Tank?

The question I keep coming back to is not “Will Thundercracker need a new battery?” The bigger question is “At what point does replacing the battery make more financial sense than replacing the car?”

A replacement battery could cost somewhere around $12,000-$16,000, but that does not automatically add $12,000-$16,000 of resale value to the vehicle. A battery replacement is primarily an ownership decision, not an investment.

When Thundercracker approaches 120,000 miles, the math will get interesting. Do I spend thousands replacing the battery in a six or seven-year-old vehicle, or do I use that money toward a newer Tesla with a fresh warranty, newer technology and a new battery?

That is a question gasoline-car owners rarely have to consider. With a traditional vehicle, you replace engines and transmissions when they fail. With an EV, battery condition becomes part of the long-term ownership equation.

Would We Buy Thundercracker Again?

Yes.

Thundercracker is quick, comfortable, practical and inexpensive to charge at home. Maintenance has been minimal, and we still enjoy driving it.

For most of our daily use, the reduced range does not matter.

The point is not that Tesla batteries are bad. The point is that EV ownership requires thinking differently about range and aging.

A gasoline driver expects the fuel tank to stay the same size. An EV owner should expect the battery’s usable capacity to decline over time.

Thundercracker still does everything we need it to do. It just does it with a slightly smaller “fuel tank” than the one we started with.
